SALT LAKE CITY — Utah and Salt Lake County rank high in the nation as positive places for jobs using artificial intelligence.

Data posted by LinkUp (which provides labor demand data) in collaboration with the University of Maryland shows that out of all new job postings in March, 2025, Utah was 17th in the nation for postings that require AI skills.  The LinkUp data also shows that the Salt Lake metro area had the majority of the postings involving artificial intelligence in March.

AI investments in Utah

According to Utah’s Director of the Office for AI Policy, Zachary Boyd, Utah has made many smart investments that have led to this result.

“I think we do a better job of also taking care of our K-12 education. And just have a really friendly regulatory environment as well,” Boyd said, “which distinguishes us from some other major centers of AI development.”

He added that Utah’s small business-friendly regulations allow for more ways to integrate artificial intelligence into everyday parts of our lives.

“There’s a ton of work in just figuring out how to wire AI into all the aspects of our lives where it can deliver value,” Boyd said. “And I think that’s one of the areas where Utah’s going to succeed. We have a lot of good workforce space in that area.”

Boyd said that biomedical and software are two areas that are especially growing in the state.

Losing jobs to artificial intelligence?

According to Boyd, we don’t really need to worry about technology using artificial intelligence taking jobs away from people.

“Most jobs that are going to involve AI are going to be augmented by AI rather than replaced by AI,” he said.
