AS artificial intelligence (AI) usage continues to grow in various aspects of our lives — from health care and finance to educa-tion and content creation — moral guidance is becoming more urgent than ever. In his recent address, Pope Leo XIV took a bold step by making artificial intelligence a centerpiece of his papacy’s early vision. He called it “the new frontier of justice,” warning that unchecked AI adoption may distort human dignity, redefine the value of work, and deepen global inequities.

He’s not alone in sounding the alarm. His predecessor, the late Pope Francis, was the first pope to raise concerns explic-itly about AI’s moral implications. In his 2024 message for the World Day of Peace, he underscored the need for global governance of artificial intelligence, arguing that without human accountability and ethical safeguards, technology could undermine peace, truth, and the very social fabric that binds us together.
